    Engineering Analytics vs Monitoring

    Abstract

SCADA systems and Building Management Systems (BMS) are control layers; they report raw data. Engineering analytics is the calculation layer; it interprets data using thermodynamics to dictate operational strategy.

    The Limitation of Telemetry

A standard BMS polls thousands of data points via Modbus or BACnet and displays them on graphical interfaces. This answers 'what is happening' (e.g., supply is 8°C). It lacks the computational capability to answer 'what should be happening' based on current environmental variables and isentropic limits.

    Digital Twins and Physics Modeling

Engineering analytics constructs a thermodynamic digital twin. By solving fundamental mass and energy balance equations in real-time, the platform calculates the theoretical minimum energy required for the current load. The variance exposes hidden operational waste and quantifies it in kW and currency.
